An expert forecaster has weighed in on the prospect of snow in Ireland, as weather maps indicate that nearly half the country could be blanketed in snow within days.
According to the latest updates from WX Charts, a weather forecasting website, both Ireland and the UK are expected to be hit with snow starting on Sunday, 17 November.
The cold snap is predicted to persist into the following week, with snowfall increasing, particularly in the UK, which is expected to be severely affected on Sunday, 24 November.
The weather maps suggest that the northern half of Ireland will bear the brunt of the cold weather, with the eastern half also likely to experience snowfall.
However, it's essential to note that predicting snow is a challenging task, and forecasts exceeding 10 days can be unreliable and subject to change.
Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather offered his insight, cautioning that the accuracy of snow forecasts is generally only reliable a couple of days in advance. Currently, he doesn't anticipate significant rain, sleet, or snow.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he stated: "[The weather models] are just not reliable. It's hard enough to forecast snow two or three days out, weather models 10 days out is just pointless really.
"A cooldown is expected, and weather models indicate that much colder air may move in towards the end of this week/weekend and into next week.
"Some of the weather models show a blast of cold air and then low pressure mixing in some milder air, then colder air again.
"It's mainly dry though for most places so there's not much likely to be falling in terms of rain, sleet or snow. There's some showers into the northwest possible and some on higher ground, but this far out that level of detail is just not there."
