Waterford's Bonnars miss out on Fittest Family victory

Monday, December 18, 2023

After weeks of intense competition, Ireland’s Fittest Family season 11 reached its pinnacle with the highly anticipated final set against the iconic backdrop of Dublin Port on Sunday, December 17 on RTÉ.

In a heart-stopping final episode, the Stratford family from County Cavan clinched the title of this year’s competition, marking a triumph that exceeded their expectations. They were up against tough competition including Sonia O’Sullivan’s Byrnes family from Tipperary, Nina Carberry’s Murphy family from Carlow, and Donncha O’Callaghan’s Bonnar family from Waterford.

The Bonnars finished last in the Big Liffey Race, before facing the Back Against The Wall Challenge, and another dreaded eliminator, where they came out victorious against Sonia O’Sullivan’s Byrnes family.

In the end, however, the Bonnars would drop out of the competition during the Hanging Tough round, with the Murphy’s and Stratford’s making it to the Grand Final.

It was the Stratford family from Cavan that got over the line, taking the crown of ‘Ireland’s Fittest Family 2023, as well as the prize money of €15,000.

Speaking on the final, coach Donncha O’Callaghan said: “Winning is amazing and I’m so thrilled for the Stratfords! The greatest part in any sports is doing something remarkable with people that care about each other. Ireland’s Fittest Family shows more than physical fitness. No amount of strength, endurance or power can compete with the ultimate bond of a family that will go beyond limits for each other.”
