With 40 seats up for grabs, tallies show that Fine Gael and independents might have a good chance of securing the seats on the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.

All boxes in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown have been tallied with the names of 80 candidates on the ballots across six electoral areas in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown.

These LEAs include Blackrock, Dún Laoghaire, Dundrum, Glencullen-Sandyford, Killiney-Shankill, and Stillorgan.

The ballot boxes were opened at 9am this morning at the RDS, along with boxes from Dublin City, Dublin South, and Finglas.

The ballots have been sorted between local and European elections and were later moved from the RDS in Ballsbridge to the count centre in Cherrywood Business Park, Dún Laoghaire.

Since the very beginning of the tallies count this morning, it was clear that Fine Gael councillor Marie Baker is doing well.

In Blackrock, all 47 ballot boxes indicate a significant win for the sitting councillor as final tallies have shown her at the top of the poll with 26pc.

Baker has been on the Dún Laoghaire County Council for 20 years now and was previously the Mayor during her first term.

While Fine Gael is up by 5pc in Blackrock, the Green Party has seen a significant decrease of 15pc in the area. It seems like Fianna Fáil is also down by 8pc.

Fine Gael is now way ahead in the lead in Blackrock with 38pc, followed by Fianna Fáil at 15pc, Non Party candidates at 11pc and Green Party at almost 10pc.

Meanwhile, in Stillorgan, tallies have shown Green Party to be down by more than 10pc, while Fine Gael has seen an almost 15pc increase. Fianna Fáil looks to be down by 6pc.

Fine Gael candidates are topping the poll with Barry Saul currently leading at nearly 25pc, followed by Maeve O'Connell at 18.34pc.

It's a big day for independents here in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown as final tallies show a significant vote change in two LEAs.

Non-party candidates in Glencullen-Sandyford have seen almost a 40pc vote change, according to the final tallies.

A sitting councillor and an independent candidate Michael Fleming is currently in the lead at 28pc way ahead of his opponents, with the current quota set at 1,604.

Next up, a Labour candidate Lettie McCarthy, who is also a sitting councillor, is at 15pc.

In Dundrum, another non-party candidate is in the lead in the poll – Sean McLoughlin who is at 17pc – followed by Fine Gael councillor Jim O'Leary at 15pc and Fianna Fáil's Shay Brennan at 12pc.

Final tallies show one Labour and two Fine Gael candidates are topping the poll in Killiney-Shankill as all 55 boxes have been opened.

Labour's Carrie Smyth is currently leading in Killiney Shankill with almost 13pc, followed by Fine Gael's Frank McNamara and Jim Gildea.

Both Fianna Fáil and the Green Party see a drop of 4pc each, while the Green Party has a bigger loss of 9pc. Some small changes are for independent candidates with an 8pc increase and Fine Gael with a rise of 4pc.

Finally, as all tallies in 60 boxes have been sorted in Dún Laoghaire LEA, they indicate Fine Gael’s big win, as tallies show an 8pc increase for the Taoiseach’s party.

Fine Gael, who currently has 13 seats on the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, was at 24pc during the previous election.

Tallies show Fine Gael's Lorraine Hall at 12.54pc, while Green Party's Tom Kivlehan is at 11pc.

There is almost a draw between Fine Gael’s JP Durkan and Mary Fayne and People Before Profit's Melisa Halpin, with all three of them oscillating around 10pc.

While Fianna Fáil and Labour are down by 7pc and 4pc respectively, Sinn Féin saw an increase of almost 4pc in Dún Laoghaire. Aontú looks to be at 6pc.

While the boxes were being tallied earlier on, one of the tallymen in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Pat McAuliffe has told the Irish Independent: "You can see the almost 20pc of a decrease between Fianna Fáil and Labour and the Greens and that's been picked up by Fine Gael, Sinn Féin, Social Democrats and Aóntu, and Non-Party."

"The Greens are down by 9pc, which is significant.

"Labour down by 4pc, which, again, that has always been a strong area for Labour," he said.

Tallies are showing that Fianna Fáil are currently down by 7.5pc in the Dún Laoghaire LEA, where they were at 20pc in 2019.

As the official count is about to start in the Cherrywood count centre, the first elections are expected this evening.
