The Bundesliga club advanced to the final, which will be held at Wembley on June 1, after beating Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 on aggregate and will play either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid.

Sancho joined Dortmund on loan in January having been exiled by United manager Erik ten Hag following a public fallout between the pair.

The deal, which was brokered by Matt Hargreaves, United’s director of football negotiations, was valued at a minimum of €3.5million as Dortmund are contributing to Sancho’s salary.

United also stood to receive bonus payments of up to €4m based on the number of appearances he makes and the club’s performance domestically and in Europe.

An additional payment was triggered on Tuesday night for reaching the final and another windfall will be coming United’s way if the German side win the competition.

Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final? It is a great story that nobody saw coming

Through a combination of appearances, Champions League progress and qualifying for next year’s Europa League at the very least, United sources say the majority of the €4m has already been achieved.

However, the Premier League club will not receive the full amount due to one of the clauses being linked to Dortmund’s success in the Bundesliga, whether they current sit fifth with two games remaining.

Since returning to Germany in January, Sancho has played 18 times, scoring three goals and providing two assists.

Following Sancho’s performance against PSG in the first leg of the semi-final, Ten Hag said he “showed why United bought him” and that the 24-year-old “represents a high value” for the club.

Dortmund’s loan deal does not include an option to buy the winger they sold to United for £73million in July 2021.

The loan ends on June 30 after which Sancho will return to Old Trafford, although United say no decision has been made on what will happen this summer.

His contract runs until June 2026, with United holding an option of extending it to 2027.
