John Egan has confirmed that he has left Sheffield United following the expiration of his contract.

The Republic of Ireland international made over 200 appearances with the Blades since joining from Brentford back in 2018 and helped the club earn two promotions to the Premier League while also reaching an FA Cup semi-final in 2023 where they were beaten by Manchester City at Wembley.

The Cork native hasn’t featured for club or country since he suffered an Achilles injury during United’s loss away to West Ham United at the end of September although he is edging closer to a return to full fitness.

It is believed a number of clubs are chasing Egan's signature with reports recently suggesting Nottingham Forest are currently leading the race.

"To Sheffield United, it's hard to put into words how special the last six years at Sheffield United have been for me, my family, and friends," began Egan on his social media accounts.

"I have nothing but gratitude and respect for everyone that I have come across at this great football club. Two promotions to the Premier League, an FA Cup semi-final and a top half finish in the Premier League are just some of the high points that stick out, which we all worked so hard to achieved.

"Firstly, I'd like to than the fans, your unwavering support has been incredible, through all of the highs and lows. You are the reason it is such an amazing club to play for.

"To the manager and previous managers, thank you for believing in me and helping me become a better player and person. To the staff, thank you for all your hard work and support behind the scenes.

"To all of my teammates over the last six years, it was an absolute pleasure to spend every day surrounded by top players but most importantly top people.

"The memories we have made will live with me forever. I wish you all the best for the future. Once a Blade, Always a Blade."

Keith Andrews has also departed Bramall Lane after accepting a coaching role at Brentford.

The former Ireland international arrived in Sheffield when Chris Wilder returned to the club in December 2023.
