Fans split after Jordie Barrett nails high shot on future Leinster ...
Fans watching from home have had their say after Jordie Barrett was shown a yellow card right of the cusp of half-time of New Zealand’s clash with Ireland at the Aviva.
Thanks to some wet weather, it was an attritional opening half between the two sides ranked number one and three in the world.
The visitors held a three-point lead going into the break but there was some drama between the two sides before the whistle was blown for the interval.
Garry Ringrose of Ireland is tackled by Jordie Barrett of New Zealand during the Autumn Nations Series match between Ireland and New Zealand at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. Pic: Seb Daly/SportsfileBarrett, who is only a few weeks away from joining Leinster, gave one of his future teammates an unorthodox and likely unwelcome early hello.
With his opposing centre Garry Ringrose running forward with the ball, the All Blacks centre came into contact by ramming his shoulder into the chin of the Ireland star.
A quick TMO review resulted in referee Nic Berry doling out the yellow card and sending the 27-year-old to the sin-bin.
— Rugby on TNT Sports (@rugbyontnt) November 8, 2024‘Wrong decision and this “under review” is a safety net for the referees not to make a decision and stand by it,’ one fan wrote. ‘Wasn’t even a yellow few years ago.’
Another disagreed: ‘Very close to a red.’
A fellow fan added: ‘The red/yellow card threshold and all these mitigations has way too many grey areas for me Jordie Barrett should have a red card it’s shoulder to head direct so that’s no mitigation.’
not looking good for jordie barrett, yes gary ring rose was being tackled and had begun to fall, but jordie wasn’t very bent and drove upwards into the head… interesting to see what the call will be whether to upgrade to red or stick with yellow#IREvNZL #AutumnNationsSeries
— alanah???????? (@alanahisrugby) November 8, 2024Unlucky yellow for Jordie Barrett. Victim of the silliest aspect of modern day rugby.
— Jambase (@NdinguJamby) November 8, 2024The Jordie Barrett yellow makes no sense… He hinges and Ringrose is being tackled from behind so is dipping as Barrett hits him. Also… Jordie hits him on the shoulder first. Why do they rush to cards when you have VAR?
— Mbulelo Khayalethu Thinta (@MKTInspires) November 8, 2024Following a bunker review during the half-time break, it was decided that Barrett’s high shot would remain a yellow.
For the first time during the Autumn Nations Series, World Rugby are trialling out a new 20-minute red card during bunker reviews – but luckily for Barrett, he avoided the new punishment.
