Marissa Sheva was left in tears on the bench over being the guilty party that gave away the spot kick in the close contest.

But there were still many positives to take from the game when with Ireland skipper Katie McCabe putting in a buzzing performance throughout.

If Australia attacked McCabe, they ran into a brick wall as she stood her ground and wasn't afraid to let the Matildas know she was there.

But it was also much more than a rearguard action from the Girls in Green with McCabe bossing the game on the left and O’Sullivan showing why she is among the best in the world.

Fans were blown away by the skipper's tireless work as she threw herself about for the cause.

And fans all shared a similar joke after the Arsenal star's post-match interview on RTE.

One said jokingly: "Katie McCabe pulling no punches in the post-match interview."

Another tweeted: "No yellow card for katie (a broken finger or two instead) gutted for the girls, played brilliantly and deserved an equaliser."

A third posted: "A pretty standard Katie McCabe loving physical tackles answer.

Tony: "it was a very physical, very aggressive game wasn't it?"

"Katie: "yeah, I enjoyed it."

And a fourth added: "Katie McCabe aggression energy and quality at moments very, very good."

Ireland now play Canada on Wednesday morning with a result crucial if the Girls in Green are to progress from the group stages.

They travel to Perth ahead of next Week's clash with more belief that they can do something in the tournament.

Meanwhile, Marrissa Sheva admitted she was “crushed” at conceding the penalty as Ireland lost - but felt it was a soft one.

But Sheva felt it was a harsh call as she claimed there was very little contact as Hayley Raso fell as the pair tangled in the area going for a cross.

Sheva said: “I was frustrated because I don't feel like I made that much contact. But it's a strategic thing.

“I haven't watched it back so I don't want to say entirely but yeah, it was frustrating.

“And it's frustrating to lose that way. And I'm crushed for the girls that that's how we conceded, but the support from them has been incredible.”
