Katie McCabe made history on Wednesday when she became the first female Irish footballer in history to be nominated for the Ballon d'Or.

The Arsenal star was named on the shortlist along with 29 other players for the prestigious award which recognises the best player in the World over a 12 month period.

"Getting the @UWCL win with @arsenalwfc and being nominated for the 2023 Ballon d’Or! Very proud to be nominated among the best in the world!! Blessed" wrote McCabe on 'X' after the announcement was made.

The women's Ballon d'Or award has only existed since 2018, so it perhaps comes as no surprise that McCabe is the first Irish player to be in the running for the gong.

However, the trophy has been handed out in the men's game since 1956 and a number of Irish players including Liam Brady and Roy Keane have been nominated for the award in the past.

In fact, Keane's nomination in 2000, where he finished in 27th place behind winner Luis Figo, was the most recent Irish nomination until McCabe's.

Katie has had a fabulous year at club level and played a key role in Arsenal's run to the Champions League semi-final. She scored a number of World-class goals, including a goal of the season strike against Manchester City, and starred as Arsenal won the League Cup.

At International level, McCabe led Ireland to their first-ever tournament at this Summer's World Cup and excelled as Ireland were unlucky to be knocked out at the group stage.

The 27-year-old scored Ireland's first goal at a major tournament during the second group game against Canada. That ambitious goal direct from a corner-kick was nominated as goal of the tournament.

McCabe returned to action with the gunners in their 3-0 Champions League qualifying win over Linkoping.
