Pete Taylor, the father of Olympic gold medal winner Katie Taylor, has said the Imane Khelif gender row is a 'cover-up' and 'smokescreen' to distract from judging controversy at this summer's Paris Games.

Taylor, who was in the corner for his daughter's win back in 2012, defended Algerian fighter Khelif and called amateur boxing 'corrupt' in a rant posted online.

Social media became rife with speculation about Algeria's Imane’s strength which led to misinformation surrounding her gender, with many sharing the false claim across social media that she is a transwoman.

And Taylor took to social media to give his two cents before launching a scathing attack on amateur boxing.

Taking to Instagram, he said: "I said I'd talk about female boxing in the Olympics and the controversy. Everybody is talking about this girl who is meant to be a man.

"At the end of the day, she was born a girl and she was boxing in the Olympics. She has been beaten by girls before in all the other competitions.

"I believe she really is a girl and I believe her controversy is over being let out by the Olympic Council just to cover up bad judging that is going on.

"They have had a terrible day of judging again, Daina Moorehouse and Aoife O'Rourke. Two great fights, both of them won their fights. Daina Moorehouse was outstanding and won the fight against the French girl easily.

"Nobody is talking about that fight today, all they are talking about is that that transgender girl or seemingly transgender girl who is not a transgender girl.

"It's just a smokescreen to cover up the terrible judging at the Olympic Games and everyone is getting carried away with it saying 'men are beating up women'. It's not true.

"Every time there is boxing, nobody talks about the performance of the boxer, all they talk about is the bad judging

"It's corrupt and everybody knows it is corrupt no matter who is in charge.

"At the end of the day, it's all about bad judging and it is just a smokescreen to cover all of that."
