Derry have beaten Kerry in the opening round of the Allianz Football League.

After a back-and-forth battle in Tralee, Shane McGuigan struck a free in the dying seconds to give the reigning Ulster Champions a much-deserved win.

With Mickey Harte at the helm for the first time in the league, Derry set about making a statement and did so early doors by racing into a five-point lead as Kerry struggled against a strong breeze.

The Kingdom threatened to kick into life near the end of the first-half but could only manage to reduce the deficit to four at the break.

With the wind in their face, Derry kicked the first two scores of the second-half to open up a six-point lead before a fine Kerry score reduced the gap to five.

Leading 0-10 to 0-5, Derry looked in complete control but their grip on the game loosened when Ciaran McFaul was shown a black card for fouling Gavin White.

Seanie O'Shea kicked two with Derry down to 14, but McGuigan stretched the lead to four with another fine score.

Kerry reduced the gap to one following Conor Geaney's goal. Derry keeper Odhran Lynch was left stranded as he tried to join the attack and Geaney finished well into the empty goal.

Derry responded well to the goal with a couple of their own scores before Kerry corner back Dylan Casey found himself one-on-one with Lynch and rifled the ball home.

McFaul put Derry ahead by one before Kerry conspired to butcher two huge goal chances. On both occasions Stephen O'Brien tried to handpass to O'Shea to palm into the empty goal, but twice the Kerry duo made a mess of finishing the chance and Derry survived.

Graham O'Sullivan eventually equalized for Kerry and with Derry on the ropes, goalkeeper Shane Ryan bombed forward in search of a winner.

His high shot tailed wide and when Derry got a free-kick in front of the posts moments later, Shane McGuigan made no mistake and secured the two points for Harte's men.
