Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo has apologised for his celebration after he scored in his side's draw with Liverpool.

The 18-year-old midfield star put United ahead in the second period after Bruno Fernandes' opportunistic strike had brought the scores level. Mainoo received the ball from Aaron Wan-Bissaka before turning smartly to open his body and curl the ball past Caoimhin Kelleher from just inside the area.

The Red Devils had been dominated in the opening 45 minutes of the match and went without recording a shot as Liverpool took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break. The opening 20 minutes of the second period saw complete turnaround and jubilation when Mainoo's effort hit the net.

The newly capped England international was celebrating before most, however. The youngest player to score a Premier League goal against Liverpool, he couldn't contain his emotions even before the ball hit the net.

It was an undeniably big moment for Mainoo who was unnecessarily apologetic. He said: "Yeah, it felt good so got ahead of myself. Sorry."

The teen star added: "Unbelievable feeling, first professional goal at Old Trafford and to do it in this fixture is also amazing. At the end of the day, we don’t walk away with the three points so I can’t be too happy."

Mo Salah's 84th-minute penalty denied United all three points. Wan-Bissaka brought down Harvey Elliott inside the area to provide the Egyptian with a chance from the spot.

Mainoo believes his side need to iron out small mistakes that are costing the team in a big way. It is the third game in succession that United have dropped points from a winning position late on.

While many may see a draw against title-challengers Liverpool as a positive result, Mainoo can't help but be disappointed.

He said: "Disappointed [with only a point], to be honest, because I feel like second half we performed really well. We picked it up and the lads worked really, really hard. It was minor mistakes that in the end were major. Need ironing out and we can win the game."
