Two brothers of five-time All-Ireland winning Limerick hurler and 2024 Hurler of the Year nominee, Kyle Hayes, were today remanded on bail for trial, charged with assaulting a man and being armed with hurleys during the course of the alleged attack.

Cian Hayes, (33), and Daragh Hayes, (37), both with an address at Ballyashea, Kildimo, Co Limerick, appeared before Limerick Circuit Criminal Court for trial, however, the court was told of a recent change in solicitors by Daragh Hayes which today resulted in the trial being adjourned to later on this month.

The two accused siblings are each charged with assaulting a man, identified on charge sheets as Ciaran Ryan, causing Mr Ryan serious harm, at Ballyashea, Kildimo, on September 29th, 2021, contrary to Section 4 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997.

The two accused brothers are also each charged with producing a hurley during the course of the alleged assault on Mr Ryan, contrary to Section 11 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act, 1990.

Prosecuting barrister, Lily Buckley, BL, told the court that Daragh Hayes changed his solicitor “last week” and she was seeking an adjournment to allow Mr Hayes’ new solicitor time to receive the necessary paperwork to come on record deal with the case going forward.

Judge Elva Duffy said the trial would take “priority” and that changing a solicitor “can’t interfere with that”.

The judge granted the adjournment and she warned that she would not allow any further changes to legal representatives in the case prior to the trial.

The alleged victim was present in the court (Monday 7th October), it was heard.

The two accused were also present in court but they did not address the court.

Judge Duffy remanded both accused on continuing bail to appear before Limerick Circuit Criminal Court for trial on October 21st.
