She told British police she had no idea where her eight-year-old son Kyran is and could not give an explanation of when he disappeared and what might have happened to him.
Schoolboy Kyran was reported missing at the end of August, but last month Gardai said the lad is now “presumed dead” and launched a murder investigation.
He was last publicly seen alive at a Dundalk primary school in June 2022, but detectives still have no idea when and how he actually died.
A police source said: “She has been asked about the missing child and she has confirmed she does not know anything about it.
“She is distraught at the disappearance of her son and is staying with pals over here in England.”
Following a number of appeals, Gardai have been inundated with information from the public and are slowly following up every lead.
A senior officer involved in the investigation said it is going to take time and they have to be extremely careful what they say.
And a Garda source said their priority is to find out exactly what happened to Kyran.
Cops hunting for the lad carried out a dig in Dundalk, Co Louth, last month.
They plan to dig at a number of other locations in due course — but both the public and the press will be informed in advance of that happening.
The previous search at a house where the Durnin family used to live didn’t uncover any significant evidence.
Meanwhile, Gardai have eliminated a number of men known to Kyran Durnin’s family from the murder probe.
It is understood that each of them contacted cops to declare they had nothing to do with the eight-year-old child’s disappearance.
At least two of the men were friendly with mum Dayla and the family but didn’t have any association with the child.
FRESH APPEAL FOR INFOA Garda source said: “A number of men have been in contact with us to make it clear they knew the family but not Kyran and had nothing to do with him going missing.
“They each rang in good faith and were very helpful to our enquiries.
“Some people have been pointing the finger of blame at these individuals – but they are totally innocent and had nothing to do with Kyran’s disappearance.”
Last week Drogheda Dolls - a powerful and influential facebook group with 30,000 female members - issued a fresh appeal for information.
They said: "I know there’s a lot going on in the town with the little boy Kyran Durnin missing and a lot of negativity and anger.
“Please if you have any information at all, however small, please reach out. It’s important to remember to be respectful while the truth is sought.
“I pray this innocent little boy is found and people do the right thing.”
Gardai are hopeful that local women with even a tiny bit of knowledge about the case might provide them with valuable new clues.
