Disaster loomed halfway through the first night of Lauryn Hill’s tour as the superstar of late 1990s hip-hop brought her son Zion Marley (grandson of Bob) out for a forgettable medley of reggae tunes. “Turn him up, turn him up!” Hill barked to the sound man as Marley battled a subtlety-free backing band.
As he sang, Hill disappeared beneath a giant parasol to the side of the stage. Did another meltdown beckon for the artist whose reputation for rambling performances and Axl Rose-style late arrivals has overshadowed her accomplishments as a singer and MC?
