THOUSANDS of students are receiving their Leaving Certificate results this Friday morning, August 23.

Some 60,839 students in Limerick sat their Leaving Certificate exams this year, with 4,048 students sitting Leaving Cert Applied exams.

Those getting their highly-anticipated results can access them through the candidate self-service portal, open from 10am this Friday.

From there, students can view their results and get a statement of their provisional results.

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Patrick O’Donovan and congratulated students, saying: “Today is unique day in the lives of thousands of young people as they receive their Leaving Certificate results.

“As ever at this time of year, there will be many who will be celebrating their success in the exams, while others may be feeling disappointed.

“However, I want to reassure everyone that, while it is a significant day, the Leaving Cert results do not define you as a person,” the TD said.

This is the third year of Leaving Certificate results that have had a post marking adjustment (PMA) applied in order to ensure that result outcomes are on a par with previous years.

The State Examinations Commission has said 2024’s results are at the same level in the aggregate as last year’s and there has been no grade inflation.

Described as a 'hangover' from Covid-19, 68% of all grades increased following the marking process with the application of the PMA this year, resulting in an average adjustment of 7.5%.

Speaking on the 2024 Leaving Certificate results, interim Chairperson of the State Examinations Commission, Mr Martin Sisk offered his congratulations to the Leaving Certificate class of 2024, and said that "following the marking of the examinations, the SEC implemented a post-marking adjustment to give effect to the Minister’s commitment that the 2024 Leaving Certificate results in the aggregate will be no lower on average than those in 2023".

"In all of our work on the 2024 Leaving Certificate, we have endeavoured to ensure that candidates are treated fairly and equitably, that results are of the highest standards of quality, and that there is full transparency for candidates," he said.

Students who opted to apply for third-level education courses will receive their offers in CAO Round One next Wednesday, August 28, where they will find out whether their points grant them a spot in their prospective college course.

The intended date for the issue of the results of the Leaving Certificate appeals is Friday 27 September.

The statistics of the most popular courses among students applying for third-level education options this year have been revealed by the CAO.

Over half (56%) of all 83,169 applicants in 2024 used the CAO change of mind facility, which closed on July 1.

There were 632 less applicants that applied to the CAO compared to last year.

Applicants opting to study Physiotherapy jumped 22% this year compared to last year, making it the course that surged in popularity the most.

Healthcare remains the most popular profession among students, with 71,652 young people applying to pursue a career in the healthcare sector.
