The colleges offering another chance to reach necessary maths grade

Leaving Cert results 2024

Some colleges run a special maths exam for students who come up short in the subject in the Leaving Cert, writes Katherine Donnelly

Every year, there are students who achieve the points for a CAO choice, but their maths grade is not up to the mark. While success in second-chance exams does not guarantee entry to a particular CAO course, many students do get an offer.

The nature of the exams and the courses for which they can pave the way for entry vary between colleges. Below is a guide.

Atlantic Technological University

Two options to achieve the minimum maths requirements for a chosen programme (with some exclusions):

*Enabling Maths Course (free), from Wednesday, August 28 to Friday September 6 , with assessment at equivalent to Leaving Cert ordinary level paper.

Applicants who are otherwise eligible but lack a pass in ordinary and higher-level maths are welcome. Successful students will be eligible for a place on any ATU programme for which there are “available places” and ordinary maths is an entry requirement. Classes are online, or on-campus at ATU Donegal.

Successful students will be required to participate in ongoing maths support throughout first year, delivered by the respective Maths Learning Centre.

*Alternative Maths Assessment will take place on Monday, September 2 at multiple ATU campus locations.

Dundalk IT

Exam, Monday, September 2 to allow applicants to meet requirements on BEng (Hons) in Engineering (Common Entry); BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering; BEng (Hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering; BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering; BSc (Hons) in Computing in Games Development

The exam is aimed at candidates who have either taken the higher level maths paper or have studied higher level to an advanced stage during senior cycle.

Students are advised to participate in a preparation course running from August 26-28. Fee is €30, inclusive of course.

Munster Technological University

Exams, Friday, August 30, with two separate papers. Paper One is set at ordinary level and is compulsory. Paper Two is set at higher level, and is optional. Fee is €30 for Paper 1 and €50 for both papers.

A minimum of a pass (40pc) will allow an applicant to replace the Leaving Cert maths requirement of Grade O6/H7 minimum with a grade O6/H7 minimum in another subject.

Applicants to courses that have a H4 maths requirement must sit the second paper and achieve a 70pc average across both papers.

National College of Ireland

A preparatory course from Monday, September 2 to Wednesday, September 4, with an exam on Thursday, September 5, for CAO applicants to the BSc in Data Science and the Higher Certificate in Computer Science.

South East Technological University

Two options:

*Exam, August 30, based on ordinary level syllabus and success may lead to entry to any SETU course with the exception of all nursing programmes (SE914, SE915, SE916); SE407 BA (Honours) in Accounting; SE713 B Eng (Honours) in Civil Engineering.

*Special exam on August 30 at 2pm. A pass (55pc) will fulfil the maths entry requirement for applicants to the BEng (Honours) in Civil Engineering SE713 programme as an alternative to the Leaving Cert H4 requirement. An intensive preparatory course will run on August 29 and August 30.

TU Dublin

Maths Competency Tests (MCT) over three days in the first week in September. Revision classes on September 2 and 3 and exam on September 4 for applicants to TU 805 (engineering – general entry), which has a minimum requirement of a Leaving Cert H4 in maths. A grade of 60pc or higher is deemed equivalent to a H4.

TU Shannon

University of Galway
