The format of the tournament included a regular phase in which the teams played each other in a two-round league system. The top two finishers at the end of the season earned direct promotion to the Premier League, while the teams in third through sixth place played in the playoffs for the third promotion.

This financial prize includes increases for television rights and sponsorship, which can transform a club financially, giving it the opportunity to invest in better players and infrastructure.

The stadium has a capacity of 40,000 people and opened its doors in 1897, making it one of the oldest stadiums in the country still in use. It currently ranks eleventh on the list of the largest soccer stadiums in the United Kingdom.

Elland Road is also one of the UK's leading rugby 13-a-side stadiums. It serves as the venue for England national team matches, and hosted the 2001, 2005, 2009 and 2011 Three Nations / Four Nations finals. Meanwhile, Super League's Leeds Rhinos used the stadium for the 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2010 World Club Challenge.
