This time, Labour secured success with the election of Joe Leddin for the sixth time.

The Labour man was elected on the eighth count, securing the third seat in the area alongside Fine Gael councillors Daniel Butler and Dan McSweeney.

Speaking to reporters after his election, Councillor Leddin said that it was “humbling” to be re-elected, and for the sixth time. He confessed that “elections are an emotional rollercoaster” for him, even after over 20 years on the council.

“It is humbling to be re-elected, as I said for the sixth time, but again, as I said, it’s down first and foremost to the people of Limerick City,” Cllr Leddin said.

“We’ve had highs and lows over the last 20 plus years. But look, it’s a privilege and an honour. And as I said, to be able to represent the people of Limerick City and County, albeit from Limerick City West electoral area, is it’s a huge honour.”

Cllr Leddin said he is looking forward to working with the newly elected councillors, as well as the new directly-elected mayor.

“We’re at such an exciting time in terms of local government in Limerick, with the election of our first directly elected mayor in the next 24/48 hours. So it’s a privilege to be on the council to work with whoever’s elected mayor for the greater good of Limerick,” Cllr Leddin concluded.

On the mayoral election front, ballots are currently being sorted in what was the Adare-Rathkeale counting area (now finished), and will begin counting tomorrow morning (Monday).
