Road trenches 'sinking at a rapid rate', says Limerick councillor
TRENCHES on a key suburban Limerick road are sinking “at a rapid rate”, a local councillor has said.
Fine Gael City West councillor Daniel Butler has said there has been “serious surface failures” along the Greenfields Road in Rosbrien.
Between its junction to Rosbrien Road to the Childers Road junction, Cllr Butler says the deterioration has been a major cause for concern for locals in Roundwood and Ballinacurra Gardens.
"The matter was raised with me locally and having paid a visit myself, there is a line of what can only be described as shallow trenches along the road that are sinking at a rapid rate. The traffic volumes this road carries means this is very likely to continue,” said Cllr Butler, who sits on the council's travel and traffic committee.
He says he was told by council bosses that the issue came about due to work carried out by Uisce Eireann, formerly Irish Water.
“Traffic volumes have been an issue along the road and further works are planned on the Rosbrien Road also in terms of connecting it by path from Old Crescent to Greenfields Road to improve safety along the route. Traffic at peak times has been highlighted as an issue as traffic exits the motorway at the Rosbrien Junction flooding onto the Rosbrien and Greenfields Road,” Cllr Butler explained.
He has confirmed with the water utility company it will once again send a team to look to providing a tender price for works on the road.
“The key issue now that this is in progress is when will the works take place, as due to traffic volumes on this road at peak times as schools return, it could cause carnage. I will continue to monitor progress in the hope of seeing this rectified as soon as possible,” the former mayor told the Limerick Leader.
