The city on the Shannon is no stranger to flooding, and now researchers are looking to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) and satellite technology to develop an early warning system for communities at risk of imminent, severe flooding.

Staff at CeADAR, Ireland’s centre for Applied AI, used data collected by the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-1 satellite to map historical flooding events in flood-prone areas of Ireland, including here in Limerick.

From this, they produced maps that were then fed into an AI model designed to predict the extent of future flooding events in these areas.

The model is accurate, researchers say, up to a distance of approximately 20 metres.

Crucially, this measure will give authorities involved in flood protection a window of opportunity to prepare.
