The GAA world is in mourning at the news of a fan passing away in the crowd during Limerick's game with Clare on Saturday evening.

The incident occurred around 7pm on Saturday evening at TUS Gaelic Grounds in Limerick.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed that the Gardaí attended a medical emergency at the stadium last night and that a man in his 70s passed away following the incident.

The incident took place in the first half, and it is understood that the man in question was a Clare GAA supporter.

The Limerick hurling Facebook page paid tribute to the man and also thanked emergency services for their tireless work.

"We would like to pass on our condolences to the family of the man who passed away this evening during the game in the Gaelic Grounds.

"We would like to thank all the staff and paramedics that worked tirelessly throughout this difficult event.

"Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."
