Premier League table since Trent Alexander-Arnold move speaks ...

8 May 2023

Having won six and drawn one of its matches since Trent Alexander-Arnold was deployed in a new role, it should be no surprise that Liverpool is right at the top of the standings in the Premier League since Jürgen Klopp implemented that change.

Liverpool drew, of course, with Arsenal, coming from two goals down at Anfield in that game, when Alexander-Arnold really came to life in the second half in his hybrid position.

Since then, Liverpool has beaten Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, West Ham, Tottenham, Fulham and Brentford, with Leicester, Aston Villa and Southampton up next.

In the same time period, no other side has collected as many points as Liverpool, though Manchester City has won each of its five matches to take control of the Premier League title race. Pep Guardiola's side has just played two fewer fixtures.

Crystal Palace, with 10 points from six games, places third in the mini league table, while Brighton, with nine points from four fixtures, sits in fourth spot, ahead of Newcastle, Arsenal, Bournemouth and Wolves on goal difference.

Manchester United sit 10th with seven points from five games, which has allowed Liverpool to dream of overhauling them and moving into the top four places in the real table, with the gap now down to just one point.

Tottenham places 15th with just four points from five matches, while Chelsea has only three points from five games and sits one point outside of the relegation zone over the specified period, ahead of Everton, Southampton and Leeds.

Liverpool.com says: This is a very specific part of the season, and Liverpool may simply have had favorable fixtures to play, but there is no doubt that the change in role for Alexander-Arnold has led to a real uplift in performance levels.

With more midfielders added to the squad in the summer and the changes in the transfer market giving a real refresh to the team, Liverpool can challenge right back at the top again next year.

The final few games of the season are vital even if the top four proves unreachable in order to maintain momentum and ensure that the beginning of the next campaign can see the Reds fly rather than play catch-up as they have had to this time around.

Combine fresh transfers with Alexander-Arnold being reinvigorated, and Liverpool should improve hugely. The impact that just one of those things has already made speaks volumes.
