Man United legend to give coaching masterclass in Mayo
A goalkeeping coach who trained the likes of Edwin Van Der Sar, David De Gea and Joe Hart is coming to Mayo next month for a special Coaching Masterclass.
Eric Steele, who worked under Sir Alex Ferguson at Man United, had stints as a coach with Man City, Derby County and the England National Team set-up will run a Goalkeeper Coaching Masterclass for goalkeepers, goalkeeping coaches and outfield coaches at United Park in Westport and the Castlecourt Hotel, Westport on Friday and Saturday, October 18 and 19.
He also had a distinguished playing career with the likes of Peterborough United, Brighton, Watford and more.
It is a unique opportunity to learn from one of the most respected goalkeeping coaches in the game. All levels are welcome. The event is being run by the Pro Elite GK Academy in partnership with GK Nexus.
“We’re coming over a two-day stay, the Friday night will be mostly for the coaches with some practical sessions on the pitch and presentations in the classroom,” Eric said on the Mayo Soccer Podcast.
“Saturday is going to be devoted to the goalkeepers; we’ll be delighted to get as many goalkeepers there as we can. We will put sessions on and use coaches who are resident in Ireland and run a full day.”
“Coaches will be invited to come along and see the work because it is not just about working goalkeepers, we’ll be integrating outfield players as well.” “There’ll be a dinner on Saturday with a Q&A with coaches as well, all-in-all it will be a brilliant weekend.”
Eric has had vast experience in the game and has had to adapt to the ever-changing role of the goalkeeper as a player and a coach.
“I’ve been through all the rule changes, the four step rule, the six second rule, VAR, you have to adapt to that.”
“Games last longer in the modern game, the balls move quicker, the pitches are better quality. So as a coach, you’ve had to evolve with all the on and off-field changes. Some for the better, some not for the best,” he said.
The event is being organized by former Galway United goalkeeping coach Derek O’Sullivan who said this event is ‘huge’ for the west of Ireland.
“It’s the first time something has been done like this in the west of Ireland. Not alone is it the first time but with the experience you have with Eric, you have the opportunity to learn from a master of his craft which is something that doesn’t present itself very often,” he said.
