Manchester United may regret ignoring Rio Ferdinand transfer recommendation

Manchester United reportedly want to sign a new centre-back in the upcoming summer transfer window, though it seems they ignored advice from Rio Ferdinand to sign a gem in the rough a few years ago

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has revealed that he urged the club to sign Ben Godfrey while the defender was still at Norwich City.

Godfrey has made a brilliant start to life in the Premier League having joined Everton last summer.

The young centre-back joined late in the summer transfer window, inking a five-year contract at Goodison Park.

Godfrey had been a man in demand ahead of the move, and had been linked with a host of clubs.

Numerous clubs had been linked with a move to sign him, and it seems United were one of those teams interested.

Speaking to his YouTube channel, Ferdinand revealed that he told his old side to sign the youngster when they could have signed him for just £12million.

United are expected to use the upcoming summer transfer window to improve their squad, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer determined to sign a new centre-back.

Solskjaer is believed to want a partner for Harry Maguire, someone who will be above Victor Lindelof and Eric Bally in the pecking order.

And it seems they'll have to spend a significant amount more to sign a new centre-back than they would have to sign Godfrey.

As Ferdinand explained, however, United weren't the only club interested and Godfrey wasn't the only target on their radar.

He said: “Anyone had a chance to sign him because Norwich were going to let him go.

“Listen, I told you before I’d spoken to various people at different clubs, United being one of them as well.

“They could’ve had Ben when he was about 12 or 15 mil, when he just went to Norwich, had been there about half a season or a season.

“But listen, there’s so many players we could look at and say, they were missed at that point and they had to pay more.

“That’s just life, that’s part of it, and there’s different judges. 99 people can judge a player and not like him and one just says, ‘bang, he’s for me’. It’s just that I’ve seen these boys grow so I know what’s under their bonnet, I know what they’re carrying in their toolbox.”
