The 67-year-old actor, Mel Gibson in a 2016 interview with The Guardian opened up about being offered to play a supporting character in Chris Hemsworth’s Thor arc. Marvel has a wonderful casting which many can’t deny due to the characters who often end up leaving a long-lasting impression in our hearts. When Marvel approached him to play the former king of Asgard and Thor’s father, Odin, he ended up turning down the opportunity.

“Yeah, long time ago, to play Thor’s dad. But I didn’t do it.”

The role eventually got to Anthony Hopkins who debuted in Kenneth Branagh’s first Thor film. He reprised his role in the 2017 release of Thor: Ragnarok. While Gibson was unable to enter into the franchise, he once dissed it for its violence.

At the same time, Gibson made headlines when he criticized the superhero giant for their portrayal of violence in the films. In an interview with The Washington Post, he was discussing the graphic violence in his films which concluded after he was done pointing fingers at them for depicting “violence without conscience.”

He shared,

“To talk about the violence question, look at any Marvel movie. They’re more violent than anything that I’ve done, but [in my movies,] you give a s–t about the characters, which makes it matter more. That’s all I’ll say.”

This was not new as he has criticized other Hollywood films in the past. He also addressed the flow of superhero movies making at the time.

“Some are good. Some are kind of funny … Guardians of the Galaxy. Or the first Iron Man. And some of them are just like retreats. I mean you can watch them do Spider-Man five times … There is a slight shift in film. But, then again, I think all films are suffering from people not being able to now open them with their name. It’s a different kind of business these days.”

While his entry into MCU would definitely be a great deal, it is not happening as of now. As for Thor movies, it is available on Disney+.
