The Imperial Hotel has revealed a new bronze statue of The Big Fella himself, proudly sitting on a bench outside the South Mall hotel where he spent his last night.
The new life-size statue has been in the works for months, now on display marking the 101st anniversary of Michael Collins' assassination.
After negotiating the Irish Free State Treaty in 1921, Michael Collins spent his last night alive in Room 115 at The Imperial. The Irish revolutionary stayed at the hotel for two nights before his assassination.
Collins left the hotel on August 22nd 1922 to West Cork. His convoy was ambushed at Béal na Bláth and the Freedom Fighter was shot and killed at 31 years old.
To mark Collins' 100th-anniversary last year, the hotel's Michael Collins Suite was renovated and restored to a 1920s style in keeping with its historic connection.
The hotel transported guests back to what the room would have looked like when he stayed there - with a four-poster bed, period furniture and added a commemorative bust and gold plaque.
Meanwhile, another statue commemorating Collins is to be unveiled in the city centre soon. A larger-than-life-sized bronze statue of the Big Fella with his bicycle, based on a famous photograph taken the year he died, is to be revealed on Grande Parade by the Michael Collins 100 Committee in the coming weeks.
Mallow-based sculptor Kevin Holland has been commissioned to make the statue. He is also the sculptor who made the Michael Collins Statue at Emmet Square in Clonakilty.
