President Michael D Higgins is to stay in hospital for the weekend, it has been confirmed.
Mr Higgins was taken to hospital in Dublin yesterday afternoon after feeling unwell and he is still receiving treatment this evening.
The Head of State had a consultation with specialists today and was told he could be discharged, but they would like to continue to monitor his blood pressure for a little while. The President acquiesced and will remain under observation for the weekend.
President Higgins, it’s been confirmed, was feeling faint on Thursday afternoon and an ambulance was dispatched to Áras an Úachtaráin. President Higgins did not have any palpitations or any form of heart trouble.
“President Higgins thanked the public for the outpouring of well wishes which he has received since his admission to St James’s Hospital yesterday evening and would like to express his deep appreciation to all those who have sent messages to him, as well as to the medical staff for their continuing care.
“Following tests which were carried out after his admission, the President will remain in hospital over the weekend in order to monitor his blood-pressure. It is anticipated that the President will return to Áras an Uachtaráin early next week,” a statement from Áras an Úachtaráin read.
President Higgins is also highly appreciative of the medical care and nursing attention he has received at St James’s.
He is now likely to leave hospital on Monday.
