President Michael D Higgins is the favourite fatherly role model of the nation, a poll has revealed.

An online survey by lottery company Lottoland shows that over a quarter of Irish people voted our poetry and arts loving president as their "fantasy father", making him the ultimate paternal figure of the nation.

Perhaps surprisingly U2 frontman Bono came in a close second with over one in six voting him in as their favourite fatherly figure. Meanwhile, former Late Late Show host Ryan Tubridy ranked third.

Other surprising celebrity names that popped up in the poll were Oscar nominee Paul Mescal, Niall Horan and Prince Harry. GAA darling Marty Morrissey came in last with Royal Dad Prince William and former US President Donald Trump.

Lottoland’s Laura Pearson said: “Well, it's probably no surprise to see President Michael D Higgins crowned as Ireland’s 'Father of the Nation' but we didn’t bank on the rock Dad himself, Bono, coming in next and we’re delighted to see the public affection coming in for Ryan Tubridy in as the nation’s favourite younger Dad.”

Here's the full list of results from the poll:

President Michael D Higgins 28% Bono 18% Ryan Tubridy 13% Paul Mescal 10% Niall Horan 8% Prince Harry 8% Marty Morrissey 5% Prince William 5% Donald Trump 5%
