Ireland’s Michael McGrath has been appointed the new EU Commissioner for Democracy, Justice and the Rule of Law.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen unveiled the portfolios of her new Commission in Strasbourg this morning after a protracted and at times contentious process.

Every member of my team will bring in their own experience and perspectives on Europe.

Speaking of Mr McGrath’s appointment, Ms von der Leyen said: “I have entrusted him with the responsibility to take forward the European democracy shield. He will also lead our work on the rule of law, anti-corruption and consumer protection.”

It was previously reported that the Government had been lobbying for an economic portfolio for the former finance minister. However, the commissionership for the economy went to Latvia’s Valdis Dombrovskis.

In forming the college of commissioners, Ms von der Leyen spoke repeatedly of striving for geographic and gender balance. This came after a majority of candidates put forward by member states were men, including Ireland, despite Ms von der Leyen’s request that each country put forward both a male and a female candidate.

The composition of the college in the end was 40% female, 60% male, while women held four of the six executive vice presidencies.

Tánaiste Micheál Martin offered his congratulations to Mr McGrath, saying that he has “no doubt Michael will serve on the EU Commission with great energy and diligence in this significant role, protecting the rights of consumers, the rule of law and tackling corruption”.

“It was important that the Irish Government nominated a Commissioner of the highest calibre, and Michael will no doubt bring all of his experience in Government here to his new job in Europe,” the tánaiste wrote.

I congratulate Michael McGrath on his appointment as the new EU Commissioner for Justice.
