Well-known gaelic games commentator Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh has passed away at the age of 93 in the Mater hospital in Dublin.

Ó Muircheartaigh, hailed as the "voice of Gaelic Games", was born in Dún Síon just outside Dingle, Co Kerry, in 1930 and worked as a teacher.

The broadcaster's first assignment for RTÉ was to provide an all-Irish commentary on the 1949 Railway Cup Final on St Patrick's Day. Following this, he continued teaching up until the mid-1980s when he became a full-time broadcaster with RTÉ.

Kilcock GAA Club have paid tribute to Mícheál as he "lived for years on the Meath side of the town, out near Calgath and was regularly seen in the town."

A spokesperson for Kilcock GAA Club, said in a Facebook post: " R.I.P Mícheál Ó'Muircheataigh. Laochra. The GAA community across Ireland has lost a true legend and an absolute gentleman, with the death of the iconic GAA commentator Mícheál Ó'Muircheartaigh.

"Mícheál has lived for years on the Meath side of the town, out near Calgath and was regularly seen in the town where he would get the newspaper or walk along the greenway, often having a chat with the locals along the way. It was his iconic one liners, knowledge of the game and it's community, and the mixture of Gaeilge in his commentary that made him so familiar with Gaels young and old.

"Here is a photo of Mícheál at an awards night in the club in 2011 where he was presented with a Kilcock GAA Club jacket. We will never have the likes of him again. Kilcock GAA would like to send our condolences to the Ó'Muircheartaigh family during this tough time."

Members of the community have commented under the post, one user said: "Lovely person that there will never be another like. A national treasure."

Another user said: "Rest in peace Mícheál, an absolute legend."
