Miranda Lambert Returns To Her Roots And Reclaims Her Power ...

Miranda Lambert

She’s on a roll.

Today, Miranda Lambert released a new song called “Dammit Randy,” which is once again a strong single about reclaiming her power and stepping into independence in the wake of a breakup, though I think the core message could apply to many different situations and circumstances.

The song was written by Miranda along with her producer Jon Randall and husband, Brendan McLoughlin, which is pretty surprising to see. I’m not sure how much he had to do with writing the entire thing, but still, it’s interesting that he’s listed as a co-writer and some sort of input (which could mean just two words or even a whole sentence or verse, who knows).

Miranda says the idea for “Dammit Randy” came from a conversation she had with Randall when she first embarked on the journey with her new label(s) Republic Records, as well as Nashville’s Big Loud, and how she felt so supported by her new team.

In contrast, the song shows what it’s like to have the opposite of that… “an unappreciative Randy,” as she puts it:

“This song came out of a conversation the night before Jon Randall and I went into the studio to make this album.

We were talking about how excited we were to be starting this journey with a new label family (Republic and Big Loud) and how supported we felt by them, which turned into chatting about situations where you might not feel so supported by someone – in this song’s case, an unappreciative Randy. So, this one’s for anyone with a Randy they need to move on from.”

In terms of the production and lyrics, it reminds me of a 2014, Platinum era Miranda in the best way and I love how she’s leaning into the old school version of her music and attitude that we all love so much:

“Well Dammit Randy Did You Ever Hear Me At All
You Were Standin’ Bone Dry In The Middle Of A Waterfall
You Were Livin’ In The Dark But You Couldn’t See The Light Of Day
We Were Picture Perfect But You Couldn’t Put It In A Frame

Yeah Now That I Made It To The Other Side
I Hope You’re Countin’ Singles In Your Double Wide
Smokin’ Cigarettes Like They’re Goin’ Out Of Style
Turnin’ Me Up On Your Radio Dial
You Gave Up Till The Very Last Minute
Now That I’m Gone I’ve Got Your Attention”

A tale as old as time…

The melody is infectious, and I know I’m going to have “Dammit Randy” on repeat for the foreseeable future. She doesn’t miss:

Miranda also released “Wranglers” at the beginning of May, which will likely be the lead single from her forthcoming (unofficially announced) new album.

And in terms of the direction of the new record, Miranda has previously said that it has a lot of steel guitar and a honky tonk feel, and she made it in Texas with aforementioned longtime friend and collaborator Jon Randall, who produced it alongside her.

She most recently released her Palomino album back in 2022, and I just can’t wait to hear all of the new music she has coming soon especially after hearing these first two songs.
