Some House Democrats are reportedly getting upset at Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi over her analysis of the party's heavy losses in the November election.
The anger, voiced by two senior party members in interviews with Axios, are mainly a result of a recent Pelosi interview with The New York Times in which she suggested President Joe Biden should have dropped out of the race sooner.
Had that been the case, Pelosi said, "there may have been other candidates in the race." Even though the full interview included more nuance and praise for Democrats involved, but the line was enough to catalyze internal more internal fighting and finger-pointing.
The remarks were seen by some senior Democrats as damaging to the party. "She needs to take a seat," a figure who requested anonymity told the outlet. "Making scattershot comments is not just unhelpful, it's damaging," the lawmaker added.
Another House member said the comments were undermining Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who succeeded Pelosi as party leader. "Hakeem has been tremendously graceful and respectful of her, but I don't think she is being respectful of him," a member of the Congressional Black Caucus told the outlet.
Pelosi, however, has praised Jeffries in public, saying he did a "masterful job in New York in this election," she said. "We all should praise the excellent progress made by House Democrats under his leadership."
The minority leader, on his end, discussed the weaker-than-expected results in the House saying "the buck stops with me."
