It could be the dawn of a new era for Gaelic football at Croke Park as the proposed rules changes set to undergo trial by television.

These rules been drawn up by Jim Gavin's Football Review Committee after an extensive consultative process that has seen the committee meet 31 times. They also met with stakeholders such as the standing committee on playing rules, the provincial councils, the national referees committee, and county board chairpersons, and trial proposed rule enhancements in five ‘sand box’ matches.

RTE and TG4 will screen all four interprovincial games from Croke Park, with two on Friday and two on Saturday with the so-called seven ‘core enhancements’ to be trialed along with a raft of additional rules. Referees will also be mic'd up for the trial games.

These include restricting passes back to the goalkeeper, a 40 metre scoring arc come into play (two points for a score from outside the arc) and the rule where every team has to keep three players in the opposition half at all times.

Munster will be managed by Cork boss John Cleary, while current Fermanagh manager, Kieran Donnelly takes the Ulster reins. Dessie Dolan will take charge of Leinster, after stepping down as Westmeath manager.
