Newcastle 4-0 Leicester City live reaction

After a strong first week in charge of Leicester City, there's another new challenge for Ruud van Nistelrooy: a first away game in charge.

In fact, it's first away game as a manager for quite some time. His four interim matches with Manchester United were all at Old Trafford, while he took four points from six in his opening two City fixtures, both at the King Power Stadium.

Now, he heads to Newcastle and he and his players should be confident. The Magpies have failed to win any of their last four and they only sit six points above City.

Although, van Nistelrooy does have a midfield injury predicament to deal with. Neither of his starting duo against West Ham and Brighton – Boubakary Soumare and Wilfred Ndidi – are available for selection.

We are live at St James' Park to bring you updates, analysis and reaction. Kick-off is at 3pm with team news due at 1.45pm.

Before we leave

We're about to head back down to Leicester, but before we go...

Learn more from defeat?

“Yeah, I think so. From defeat, you’re always going to learn more. We also spoke about the thin margins in the Premier League, where everything has to be right to get results. We managed to do so in the two home games. In the set-up and in the structure on the ball, things have to improve. In the second half, you saw some spells of what we wanted, but I think it was too little too late."

17:48Jordan Blackwell

How did new midfield get on?

“They did everything that they could with a great effort. Of course, it’s not easy if you haven’t played for a long time like Hamza, but I think he did a decent job. Skippy as well, he’s a reliable player. He kept going throughout the whole game, later in the partnership with Conor. Then it’s 4-0 and you have to see the game out because it’s over and done after 65 minutes.”

17:46Jordan Blackwell

See qualities like fight and spirit that you had last week?

“The domination of Newcastle was clear. The team tried and did the best they could. The game was decided in the detail. The first half was a set-piece and the second one too, straight after half-time. Those are details. Then you’re 2-0 down away at Newcastle. If you want to have a chance on the result, you have to take care of these things. If not, it’s going to be a really hard afternoon."

17:42Jordan Blackwell

Did Hermansen suggest it was serious?

“Well he couldn’t really tell. He was just certain he couldn’t continue the game. He didn’t want to make it worse. We have to assess. Hopefully it’s not too much. But of course, he doesn’t come off like that.”

17:41Jordan Blackwell

Injury to Hermansen?

“When Mads comes off, then it’s an injury. He felt a pain in the groin, so he couldn’t continue. We have to assess what it’s like.”

17:39Jordan Blackwell

Van Nistelrooy on game

“We know what St James’ Park is like. It can ignite and then it will be intense. Also the profiles of the players of Newcastle, they have a lot of strong players, high intensity in pressing and in counter-attacks.

“A 4-0 defeat, we defended bad. On the ball was our challenge. We weren’t structured enough to get some good possessions going and we had some ball losses that cost us in the counter-attacks. Set-pieces was a heavy influence today on the result.”

Full-time: Newcastle 4-0 City

Van Nistelrooy's first away game ends in City's heaviest defeat of the season. Perhaps their worst performance too.

Reaction to come.

90 minJordan Blackwell

Five minutes added

Everybody of a City persuasion wants this to be over. Preferably before Barnes really rubs it in with a fifth goal.

82 minJordan Blackwell

De Cordova-Reid on for El Khannouss

El Khannouss is one of the few City players who can be pleased with his performance. He's been City's best attacking player by some distance.

Both sides have made a raft of subs now and this game looks like petering towards its end.

72 minJordan Blackwell

Still all Newcastle

Vestergaard is having to throw himself in front of crosses and blocks to keep the scoreline down. Newcastle don't appear to be settling for four goals.

This is already City's heaviest defeat as things stand.

Tonali has just volleyed into the side-netting after a wild clearance into the air from McAteer.

64 minJordan Blackwell

Barnes on for Newcastle

It's hard to see the City fans up in the Gods, but it seems they are applauding the former winger as he comes onto the pitch.

60 minKEY EVENT

Goal. 4-0. Murphy fires in

Newcastle tear through City again and Murphy hammers in.

They can't deal with Isak right now, the Swede attracting all of the defenders and leaving Murphy in acres of space.

59 minJordan Blackwell

Triple sub for City

It's Okoli for Choudhury, and that will see Coady move into midfield.

Then it's Buonanotte for Mavididi and Daka for Vardy.

55 minJordan Blackwell

City finally finding their feet

After that awful start to the second half, they're finding their feet. They've looked at their best when El Khannouss is on the ball and he wriggles free of a challenge and slips in McAteer, who cuts inside his man and sees a low shot saved.

There seems to have been a change in the shape too, with Justin now coming into midfield when City have the ball. It's an advanced midfield position too, like the one Ricardo sometimes picked up in games last season.

50 minKEY EVENT

Goal. Isak makes it 3-0

City are falling apart here.

Newcastle tear through them down the left and the ball is crossed, with Coady fluffing his clearance to divert the ball onto Isak's head. Ward is picking the ball out of his net again.

Isak really is causing City's centre-backs all sorts of problems now, and he's just set up a chance for Murphy that was blazed over.

47 minKEY EVENT

Goal. Guimaraes heads in

Ward's first job is to pick the ball out of his net.

It's dreadful defending from City at a free-kick, as they leave Hall unmarked at the back post. He heads back across the face and Guimaraes is there in the queue to nod in.

46 minJordan Blackwell

Ward on for Hermansen

We have a change in goal for City. Hermansen has not re-emerged for the second half and so Ward comes on. You have to assume that's an injury.

It's his first league appearance for the club since March 2023.

Half-time: Newcastle 1-0 City

The hosts lead at the break and deservedly so. They have been the better team and have created the chances to show for it.

But they should be a man down too. Guimaraes can count himself lucky.

If City can play like they did in the final few minutes of the half, then they will fancy their chances of getting themselves back into this.

45+1 minJordan Blackwell

City ending the half on top

They're starting to get their attacking players on the ball in the final third, and they're looking a threat. Creating chances is the problem at the moment.

15:42Jordan Blackwell

Why has Guimaraes not been sent off?

Despite spotting that Guimaraes had dived, referee Bramall didn't give him a yellow card.

Now the Brazilian has just been booked for a foul on Mavididi. He should be off and Newcastle should be down to 10 men.

37 minJordan Blackwell

Isak should score

Oh, it should be 2-0. A ball is slotted through to Isak, who gets past Vestergaard and takes the ball in his stride expertly. He's one-on-one with Hermansen but places it straight at the Dane.

Meanwhile, Guimaraes goes down in the box and it's a dive. It's well-spotted by referee Bramall though, who gives the free-kick City's way.

35 minJordan Blackwell

City wingers swap flanks

Mavididi has gone over to the right and McAteer has come to the left as van Nistelrooy tries to make something happen by swapping his wingers over. But they are very much second best at the moment.

30 minKEY EVENT

Goal. Murphy puts Newcastle ahead

That's a well-worked corner and Murphy places it past Hermansen.

It had been coming. Newcastle win a corner on City's left and they work it short, outnumbering the City men over there. Gordon gets the ball to the byline then cuts it back to Murphy 15 yards out, who sidefoots the ball firm and low into the bottom corner of the net.

25 minJordan Blackwell

City trying to play it out from the back

City are taking on passes that they wouldn't have under Cooper but were a regularity under Maresca.

Hermansen rolls out to Vestergaard who then looks for a long pass up to Vardy, which Livramento intercepts, leading to a Newcastle chance that ends with Vestergaard just tackling Gordon.

And now more chances. Isak does really well to tee up Joelinton, whose shot is blocked. Murphy should put the rebound away, but ends it wide.

16 minJordan Blackwell

Right-side problems for City

There's been two more chances for Newcastle, and both stemming from the right, where Gordon is causing City problems. The winger's cross sets up a header for Guimaraes, which goes over, while Joelinton has had a shot saved low by Hermansen.

Meanwhile, van Nistelrooy seemed annoyed at McAteer for not being in the right place to receive a goal kick from Hermansen.

And now we've had a shot for City. Skipp turns it nicely around the corner to find Choudhury in space. He uses it, then finds El Khannouss, whose effort is blocked.

8 minJordan Blackwell

Great save by Hermansen

That's the first real chance of the match and it requires a fine save from Hermansen.

Gordon dribbles off the left wing and City don't get near him for fear of a foul. He gets to just inside the box and lets fly, Hermansen reaching high to his right to tip over.

From the corner, Burn heads just over.

7 minJordan Blackwell

Duties for City midfielders

It looks like Tonali is Skipp's man and Choudhury's on Joelinton, with one of the centre-backs taking Guimaraes.

It means Skipp is pushing forward to join Vardy and El Khannouss in the press, but Vardy seems to be wanting him to push higher.

3 minJordan Blackwell

Newcastle give it away twice

Newcastle are dominating possession in the early stages and trying to make progress down their right, but twice they've given it straight to City when passing it backwards.

Mavididi wins a free-kick from the second of those gifts but Kristiansen's delivery is poor and leads to a foul from Choudhury. If it was any later than the third minute, he's getting booked for that.
