Documentary reveals evidence of a second chamber at Newgrange
The programme aired last night ahead of the Winter Solstice today
A documentary which aired on TG4 last night, revealed evidence for a second chamber at Newgrange.
The documentary, Rún na Bóinne (Secret of the Boyne), followed a geophysics team from Ireland and Slovakia as they carried out a micro-gravity survey and geo-radar scan of Newgrange.
In the biggest find at Newgrange in over fifty years, the results indicate two anomalies deep inside the cairn.
They are positioned side by side and bear the hallmarks of a collapsed cavity.
The possible chamber, or indeed two chambers, is located to the rear of the mound and strikingly, in alignment with the existing chamber and passage.
It is available to view on TG4 Rún na Bóinne and will be repeated on TG4 on December 23rd at 11.35pm.
Hundreds are due at Brú na Bóinne today to mark the Winter Solstice.
While a small number, whose names were picked out in a lottery, are hoping to catch a view of the sunlight entering and illuminating the chamber at Newgrange from within the Neolithic passage tomb
However, as always, the spectacle at the UNESCO World Heritage Site around 8.40am is dependent on the weather conditions.
