FC Barcelona has made Nico Williams their top target for the summer transfer window, so much so, that they are reconfiguring their entire planning to try to land him.

This is according to the rumor mill, which says that signing a midfielder is no longer the top priority.

For a long time, there have been discussions that Barcelona’s main target for the transfer window was a defensive midfielder. But now, things are changing, and Barcelona apparently would prefer spending a lot on Williams and only a little on a “low cost” midfielder, than the opposite: an expensive midfielder and a cheaper winger.

Athletic Bilbao will not negotiate over the player’s price, and will instead point to the release clause, which is set for 58 million euro.

Barcelona are hoping to at least be able to pay that fee over time rather than all at once. They need to make sure they can afford Williams and stay under FFP rules.

In midfield, the Catalans will once again count on Gavi as he comes back from injury, as well as the development of Marc Casadó.

Meanwhile, in attack, Williams's signing will spell trouble for Ansu Fati, who would surely see his playing time reduced. This could lead to a transfer or loan out for him.
