She is one of the most famous women in the world which is why Julia Roberts exposing her unshaven armpits caused such a furore at the premier of the Notting Hill movie premiere in 1999.

But now the Hollywood A-lister has cleared up why she ended up exposing her hairy underarms.

She told Busy Phillips on her show Busy Tonight it wasn't supposed to be a political statement at all and was merely wardrobe miscalculation.

The Oscar-winning actress made headlines when she was snapped waving at fans at the hit romcom's London premiere.

Her unintentional act paved the way for a number of celebrity followers, including Ashley Graham, Miley Cyrus  and Lady Gaga.

The 57-year-old actress it wasn't her intention to make a statement about beauty standards and still distinctly remembers the furore.

She confessed: 'The picture is vivid in my mind actually, from that, from that moment.

'I think I just hadn’t really calculated my, my sleeve length and the waving, and how those two things would go together and reveal personal things about me.

'So it wasn’t so much a statement as it’s just part of the statement I make as a human on the planet, for myself.'

Julia has joined a flurry of female stars who have dared to reveal their hairy underarms over the years, with Madonna, Drew Barrymore and Michelle Rodriguez also being among the households names who refuse to shave their armpits to uphold beauty ideals.
