The 52-year-old ended Thursday on level-par, six points adrift of joint leaders Wilson Furr and Taylor Moore.

It could have been worse for the Dubliner, when his drive off the tee on the par-five 16th found the straw with the ball nestled under a bush.

As a result, Harrington opted to take his next shot while on his knees, allowing for a better access at the ball.

It worked a treat, as he next found the fairway before subsequently finding the green and rescuing par from a previously unenviable position.

A clip of that remarkable shot was shared to social media by the PGA Tour, with Harrington himself explaining how he did it.

He explained: "I ended up making my par. Use a wood if possible to do this as the heel doesn’t snag as much and you don’t have a shank to worry about #paddysgolftips"

Double-bogeys on 4 and 16 threatened to hand the title to Thongchai Jaidee, before birdies on 17 and 18 closed out victory.

For his efforts, he will take home a hefty cheque for $300k.

Afterwards he reflected on how he was almost left ruing a few wayward drives.

"Yeah, I never make it easy, don't do it simple.

"I think one of my best traits in golf is when my back's to the wall, I'm pretty good at taking things on."

He added: "Look, I knew I could finish birdie-eagle if I had to. I was very focused, just take it on. I was a little unlucky.

"I hit a nice tee shot on 17 and where I finished up, we thought it was a fraction to the right.

"And then obviously I hit a bad tee shot on 18, but the second shot worked out really well where it was.

"I was never not getting up and down from there.

"When you're presented with an opportunity, you've got to take it."
