It’s just over a year since Chelsea broke the British transfer record to sign Enzo Fernandez from Benfica.
The midfielder’s stock had grown massively, having just played a pivotal role in Argentina’s World Cup triumph in Qatar.
Widely regarded as one of the finest young talents in all of Europe, Fernandez was continually linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in a protracted transfer saga that went all the way down to deadline day – for a mammoth fee of £106.8million.
Having finally got their man, the rising star was tipped to help turn around the Blues’ ailing form. When he signed for the club, they were sat 10th in the Premier League table and adrift of the Champions League places.
But things ended up going from bad to worse. Graham Potter was sacked in early April and results somehow dipped further as Frank Lampard made a miserable return to the dugout.
Twelve months on, Chelsea find themselves 10th in the table and out of the top four race once again.
Fernandez himself has shown more than a few flashes of becoming a quality performer for Chelsea, particularly under his compatriot Mauricio Pochettino this season, but he hasn’t been able to have the impact he desired.
“We need time, it’s a process with a lot of new players,” the midfielder told ESPN Argentina in December.
“The group came together this year, it isn’t easy to quickly find a good way of playing.
“But we are doing all we can to find that style as quickly as possible.”
We’ve taken a look at the Premier League table since Fernandez signed for Chelsea to get a feel of how they’ve fared with English football’s most expensive player.
