PTSB is battling to sort out a problem that has left customers unable to receive payments, including wages, pensions and other transfers they are due to get today.

Subsequently the PTSB mobile phone app went down. The bank said its Open 24 desktop facility was still working.

It is investigating to work out if the issue around payments not being received is related to the app outage.

The latest problems come just weeks after the bank was hit by an IT problem that meant customers were unable to access online banking services.

The latest service issues mean payments from the likes of employers and pension providers are not showing up in customer accounts.

It is particularly frustrating for customers who want to avail of Black Friday deals, and for others who have started Christmas shopping.

The bank said: “Due to a technical issue with a third-party payments provider, some customers may be experiencing delays when sending or receiving SEPA payments. All other PTSB services are operating as normal.”

SEPA is the Single Euro Payments Area mechanism that facilitates the standardisation of electronic payments denominated in euro across Europe.

A PTSB spokesperson said: “We are working hard to resolve the issue and expect it to be resolved for the majority of customers by mid-morning.”

It said it will provide further updates through its website, social media and mobile app.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and wish to assure our customers that they will not experience any financial detriment as a result of this issue.”

It is understood PTSB is one of at least 10 banks across Europe that are affected by the issue with a third party payments provider.

IT outages are a regular occurrence for Irish banks leading to huge frustration for customers.

Today’s outage was widely condemned on social media by PTSB customers.

Pensioners said they have been left with no money as their payments did not arrive.

One person affected told the Irish Independent: “This is a disaster as it’s the last real pay day before Christmas and Black Friday.”

Earlier this month PTSB admitted that it was “experiencing a technical issue which is intermittently impacting our mobile app and desktop services.” The issue was later resolved.
