CONN Rangers turned the tables on Ballinrobe Town in the second half to book their place in the Quigley Cup final this evening.
Despite being put to the pin of their collars in the first half, goals from Adam Foody and John Paul Collins saw Joe Faughnan’s side secure their place in the final against reigning cup champions Westport United.
Both sides played the game at a high tempo from the start, but Ballinrobe Town were the better team.
Inspired by the skilful Niko Petrovic up front, the South Mayo side were well due a lead when Petrovic won a 40-60 ball, went on a dazzling run and delivered an excellent finish to make it 1-0 after 18 minutes.
They created several more chances before half-time and worked themselves at an almost unsustainable tempo.
This was evidenced by the second half, where Conn Rangers gradually grew into the game until John Paul Collins headed home the equaliser from a corner in the 68th minute.
Three minutes later, Conn’ were in dreamland when Adam Foody lobbed the ‘Ballinrobe keeper with a header after a long ball from the back.
Ballinrobe were still in the game and kept creating opportunities, but Conn Rangers saw it out to set up a final clash with a Westport United team that put nine past Swinford earlier that evening.
A full report plus reaction from Conn Rangers manager Joe Faughnan will be carried in Tuesday’s Mayo News.
