Kerry Intermediate Club Championship Quarter Final: Laune Rangers 3-19 Glenflesk 2-18 (after extra-time)

Eoghan Hassett goaled late in the second half of extra time as Laune Rangers ensured safe passage to the semi-final stage of the Kerry Intermediate Championship.

Down by seven points early in the second half, the Killorglin men battled hard to come right back into the tie.

Starting brightly in the opening period of extra time they amassed a three-point lead, the real killer blow arrived when Dáire Cleary goaled in stoppage time to put them ahead 2-17 to 0-17. That was until seconds later Stephen Doherty found space to goal for the hosts and they would reduced the gap to three at the interval stage.

With five minutes elapsed in the second half Brian O’Dongohue struck the net to level the tie 2-18 a piece as tension was palpable. Just two minutes later John Burke meandered for the sideline and hand passed for Hassett who found the back of the net. Glenflesk threw everything to force penalties, but they were thwarted and a late fisted point from Seán Cleary ensured a four-point win. The Intermediate quarter final voodoo for home teams continues.

Laune Rangers drew first blood in the seventh minute as John Tyther struck a free from close range. The sides would be deadlocked 0-2 a piece by the 10th minute as Ian Roche dissected the posts from range.

Kerry footballer Darragh Roche gave the home side the lead seconds later as he floated a point off his left boot. By quarter's end the sides were level on the third occasion, it remained nip and tuck until Roche delivered two magic scores to give Glenflesk a 0-6 to 0-4 lead by the 22nd minute.

Eoghan Hassett, nephew of Liam, struck two quickfire points to level proceedings again by the 26th minute, however Glenflesk finished the opening half the stronger. Two Tommy Bowler frees, another Roche free and a score from Jamie Moynihan, son of Kerry legend Seamus, had the hosts ahead 0-10 to 0-6 at the break.

Darragh Roche was an inspired figure for Glenflesk, covering two early frees, he added a sensational score from an acute angle from the right channel to extend the hosts lead to seven by the 36th minute.

Wides were starting to tally up for Laune Rangers but as the third quarter ensured they came right back into the tie. Tyther added another free before a long ball from Eoin Clifford was gathered by Gearoid Hassett and he fired to the net.

John Burke added the next score two minutes later and the once misfiring attack reduced the deficit to two points. Frees off the left foot of Bowler had a three-point gap, 0-15 to 1-9 between the teams inside the final ten minutes.

With five minutes remaining Glenflesk came close to putting the insurance on the tie, Dylan Roche sent a long ball in for his brother Darragh, he raced for goal but was denied by Jason Browne making a stunning save in the Laune Rangers net.

Straight down the other end Matthew Leslie and Eoghan Hassett added points to cut the gap to one. Despite Darragh Roche scoring another sensational point from an acute angle, Leslie and a score from Fiachra Clifford deep in stoppage time ensured extra time.
