Ruben Amorim has left both Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho out of Manchester United's squad for their trip to neighbours Manchester City.

The duo have been involved in every United matchday squad this season and speaking to Sky Sports, Amorim confirmed that they are not injured but were instead omitted due to their “training, performance [and] engagement with teammates.”

Amorim said: “I’ve informed Garnacho and Rashford on WhatsApp. There is a communication after the last training, as always. They are alright. They had training this morning and I was there. They trained really well!

"We tried to evaluate everything – training, performance, game performance, engagement with teammates. Everything is on the line when we analyse and try to choose the players. It’s my selection. I don’t want to send a message, it’s simply evaluation. Everyone understands my decision."

And speaking in the studio shortly before kick-off, Roy Keane admitted it was a big call by the United boss.

"He's obviosuly seen something he doesn't like. Whatever about their on the field performance, he's on about their attitude in terms of training, travelling, the way they speak to staff, workrate, etc.

"To leave them out of the squad is a big call but for us who have watched United recently, it's also not that big a surprise because both players have been poor.

"He probably said 'enough's enough' and we will see also how they react to this big disappointment.

"It's a big call from the manager but I like to see it, he's put down a marker to these players and it's now about how they react to it.

"It mightn't be the end of him (Rashford), let's not be writing him off he's just been left out of the squad but it doesn't look good for him.

"I feel a move for Marcus would definitely suit the player, a new challenge for him, he's been at the club a long time.

"He's done well for the club but over the last year or two... whatever about talent at a big club but if your attitude isn't quite right - and his certainly hasn't been great recently - sometimes I think it's good to part ways."
