During the opening of Sunday, 8 December's finale, Donnelly and his longtime colleague Ant McPartlin recapped the eventful journeys of this year's finalists: Danny Jones, Coleen Rooney and Coles.

Coles, who works as a Church of England priest nowadays following a musical career in synth-pop duo The Communards, is apparently the record-holder in the Bushtucker eating trials thanks to his two turns at the jungle dinner table over the last three weeks.

What, how and why?

"Tonight we crown a brand-new King or Queen of the Jungle..." said McPartlin as he and Donnelly strolled across their rainforest TV studio for the final time this year.

"And after three weeks of some of the most extraordinary weather we've ever seen here in Australia, we're down to our final three celebrities and what a time they've had!" chipped in his friend.

McPartlin added: "Oh I know! Danny started the series with a snake in his shorts and he's morphed into the purple python himself!" as Donnelly then told viewers: "Football fans won't be surprised to see a Rooney in another final and Reverend Richard has swallowed more body parts than anybody else in I'm a Celebrity history!"

"Ha-ha! He's gonna have to ween himself off them by wearing camel anus patches!" quipped his co-star.

Interviewed by McPartlin and Donnelly later on, having finished in third place, Coles suggested he was actually benefitting from the calories even though the grub was nightmarish.

In previous episodes, Coles took on the traditional Swedish snack of fermented Baltic Sea herring, which McPartlin described as "the worst thing I've ever smelt on this show".

Together with campmate Tulisa Contostavlos, the 62-year-old also struggled to keep down bull's tongue, sheep's testicles, goat's penis, cow's nose, mice feet and tails, and a camel's vagina.

He heroically managed to eat everything, though, winning countless meals for the camp.

I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! aired on ITV1 and ITVX.
