The ex-football player and manager was in the German capital filming for an upcoming show when he randomly bumped into the former chancellor of Germany after leaving a restaurant.

Collins told the story as he spoke to Oliver Callan alongside his friend Paul Howard on RTE Radio 1 on Tuesday.

Howard explained: "We were in Berlin and this woman was passing by and he says 'ah howya Angela' and the TV crew he was with went 'oh God no' so she shouted 'excuse me' and they're like 'he's said something to this woman' and they turned around and it was Angela Merkel.

"What are the chances? Roddy Collins and Angela Merkel. They ended up having this chat in the street for about ten minutes."

Collins took up the story and said: "I walked out of a restaurant, I was after been doing the bit of food and next of all I seen this woman and I said 'ah howya Angela, what's the craic?' That's exactly what I said and I put me hand out and she put her hand out and then pulled it back and the bodyguard put his hand on the gun. There were two bodyguards, he put his hand on the holster and I went 'I'm only saying hello'."

When asked what they talked about, Collins stated: "The weather, whatever. I was raging she didn't say 'Rod, how is the book going?'"

He added: "Two minutes later she came back up the street and I said 'Angela, we're here, we're tourists, we're doing a bit' and she said 'enjoy Berlin'. That's what she said and that was it."

Collins joked: "I'm sure she went home and said 'I met the Rodfather'. She didn't even ask me for a selfie. I was raging."
