Ronaldo put his side 2-0 up at the Estadio da Luz in the 34th minute when he got on the end of a Nuno Mendes cross with a tap-in volley from close range, before falling to the ground looking emotional at reaching another milestone.

The 39-year-old has now netted 131 international goals, 450 for Real Madrid, 145 for Manchester United, 101 for Juventus and 68 for his current club Al Nassr as well as five for his first club Sporting Lisbon

Argentina's Lionel Messi, second in the all-time scorer's list, has bagged 859 career goals.

Manchester United's Diogo Dalot scored at both ends in the first half as Portugal edged it 2-1.

Scotland suffered heartbeak at Hampden Park as Nicola Zalewski's penalty deep in stoppage time gave Poland a 3-2 victory after Steve Clarke's side had rallied from two goals down.

Robert Lewandowski set up Sebastian Szymanski to fire Poland's opener from 25 yards and Lewandowski added the second himself from the spot before the break.

Billy Gilmour drilled just his second career goal just after the restart to give Scotland hope. Scott McTominay levelled from close range with 15 minutes to play.

But with time almost up, Grant Hanley’s lunge felled Zalewski, who picked himself up to snatch victory.

Elsewhere, early strikes from Paddy McNair and Daniel Ballard earned Northern Ireland a 2-0 victory over Luxembourg as they got their latest Nations League campaign off to a winning start.

With both goals coming in the opening 17 minutes, the only disappointment was that Michael O'Neill's side did not add to their tally as they dominated their first match at Windsor Park in 10 months.

It was only a second win in 17 tries for Northern Ireland in the short history of this competition, but builds on the momentum of recent improved performances as they look to get themselves out of League C.

Denmark's Patrick Dorgu scored a minute after coming off the bench for his debut as his side beat nine-man Switzerland 2-0 in their Group 4 clash at the Parken Stadium on Thursday.

The Danes thought they had won a penalty early in the second half when Nico Elvedi picked up a booking for upending Kasper Dolberg, but after a VAR review the referee changed his decision to a free kick just outside the box and a red card for the Swiss defender.

Jonas Wind had the ball in the net in the 72nd minute but the goal was chalked off for offside, and nine minutes later the 19-year-old Dorgu was introduced for his first cap as his side chased a winner.

A minute later he was on the scoresheet, latching on to a ball from fellow substitute Andreas Skov Olsen and firing home with his right foot.

Any chance the Swiss had of mounting a comeback disappeared when captain Granit Xhaka, who was booked in the aftermath of the goal, was dismissed in the 87th minute after picking up his second yellow card.

Danish captain Pierre Emil Hojbjerg wrapped up the victory with a stoppage-time goal from another Skov Olsen assist to leave Denmark top of the group.

That puts the Danes top of the group after Spain and Serbia played out a scoreless draw in Belgrade.

The European champions came in on a nine-match winning run but couldn't break down a stubborn home side in an ill-tempered clash.

Ayoze Perez had Spain's best chance of the first period, but his effort was saved by Serbia goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic.

Spain had 22 attempts in all with Dani Carvajal spurning a prestable opening in the second half. While  Rajkovic reacted well to turn away Lamine Yamal's curler 15 minutes from time.
