A superb Tony Kelly goal denied Cork their day in the sun

And they had one of their favourite sons cheering them on in the form of Cork-native Roy Keane.

Man Utd legend Keane received a huge ovation when he appeared on the big screen as President Michael D. Higgins met both teams.

This led to the Leeside supporters breaking out in a chant of 'Keano, Keano' in honour of the former Republic of Ireland and Man Utd captain.

He did not prove to be a good luck charm, however, as the Banner came through in extra time with a one-point win.

Roy Keane hails ‘brilliant’ All-Ireland hurling final

He has previously revealed that he would rather go to the All-Ireland hurling final than the Super Bowl.

Asked on Sky Sports if he would go to 'one big event', Keane said: "The Super Bowl in America in fantastic or any game - any American football game in America but sporting occasion - I do have to say a hurling, All-Ireland final in Ireland is really hard to beat.

"It's a great day out - especially if Cork are playing - obviously my home town."

Keane was then pressed to pick his top three sports stars and he gave a shout-out to Cork legend Jimmy Barry Murphy.

He added: "Growing up - I would go with Muhamad Ali.

"I just love watching any of his old fights, his interviews, obviously the influence he had on people - a superstar all over the world. Amazing.

"Growing up again in Ireland - the GAA was a big part of my life.

"Hurling - watching Jimmy Barry Murphy playing for Cork - you know, brilliant sportsman.

"And again, as a young person growing up - watching Barry McGuigan on the television fighting. I just remember Barry - we'd all be glued to it.

"Obviously there was brilliant other Irish people like Dennis Taylor but yeah, Barry McGuigan would have to be up there."
