Football Digest: Liverpool need additions before deadline

Key Events

Liverpool's busy summer has been focused just as much on the players leaving the club as those who are coming in, but on transfer deadline day it is clear that new arrivals are needed.

Bayern Munich's Ryan Gravenberch is set to complete a medical on Friday after a deal was finally agreed, with hopes he could make his debut at the weekend. Meanwhile, many feel that a new defender is also required given the injuries in the position as well as the suspension to Virgil van Dijk.

One transfer story that the Reds wish would disappear is the one that surrounds Mohamed Salah and Saudi Arabia, with the club adamant that they will not let their top scorer in each of the last six seasons move on. The Saudi transfer window stays open for foreign additions for another week after the Premier League one closes, so that story could well run and run.

Stay with us for the latest on that and other deals surrounding the Reds.

Klopp on Liverpool's new midfield

Jurgen Klopp has spoken about Liverpool's brand new midfield after a summer of change.

"We pretty much have to reinvent the team. The midfield is now already and will be completely new," he said in a press conference ahead of Sunday's game against Aston Villa.

"The players we've brought in are really good and will help the team get better."

"We are less experienced, and that's normal, but we are full of desire and I love this team."

Klopp provides Salah update

Jurgen Klopp was asked about Mohamed Salah's future ahead of Liverpool's meeting with Aston Villa, and made his position clear.

The Reds could face a bid from the Saudi Pro League, with a chance for any exit to unsettle the squad.

"The position remains the same absolutely," the manager said.

"That's how it is. Nothing else to say. No offer as far as I know."

Origi returning to Premier League?

Divock Origi looks set for a deadline switch to England, according to Sky in Italy.

The Belgian striker left Liverpool last summer, joining AC Milan, but only managed two goals for the Rossoneri in a difficult season.

Burnley, Fulham and Nottingham Forest are all in the mix for Origi, who scored 22 goals in 107 Premier League games for Liverpool, many from the bench.

Reds told to expect Salah fireworks

Saudi Arabian champions Al-Ittihad will offer a £120million transfer bid to land Mohamed Salah – but Liverpool are set to stand firm and reject the offer.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has downplayed rumours Salah could leave Anfield, while the player's agent Ramy Abbas Issa insisted earlier this month that the forward "remains committed to LFC". However, the Saudi transfer window does not close until later in the month and they will launch a concentrated effort to land the Egyptian.

Team-mates' role in Phillips' Celtic move

Nat Phillips has completed a loan move to Celtic, and has told club media how Andy Robertson and former Bhoys star Virgil van Dijk assured him before the switch.

“Robbo is probably just as excited as I am and I think, potentially, a little bit jealous because he loves it here," the centre-back said.

“And the same with Virgil. He had a great time here, so I’ve heard nothing but good things."

Gravenberch's dream shirt number available ahead of Liverpool transfer

Liverpool are pushing to sign Ryan Gravenberch from Bayern Munich on Transfer Deadline Day – and they can offer him a nice incentive to sign.

Jurgen Klopp has been keen to sign another midfielder for weeks after the shock of losing both Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to the Saudi Pro League. After weeks of speculation, they moved for Gravenberch late in the window and are close to getting their man.

Mirror Football understands Gravenberch is flying to Merseyside to complete a medical ahead of a £35million move from Bayern. The 21-year-old has always been open to the move, with game time hard to come by in Bavaria.

Liverpool’s patience in the pursuit looks like it will pay off and, as an added extra, the club will be able to offer Gravenberch a sweetener. While he hasn’t had the chance to wear it as much as he’d like, the Netherlands international has donned the No38 at Bayern.
