Firefighters used special breathing equipment as they dealt with a blaze that shut down one of the capital’s main bridges for a time this morning.

A truck went up in flames during morning rush hour, shutting the Samuel Beckett Bridge in both directions for several hours.

Dublin Fire Brigade posted dramatic pictures online of the blaze at around 8.30am.

“North Strand firefighters were called to a truck fire this morning on the Samuel Beckett Bridge,” DFB said.

“Using high pressure hose reels, firefighters in breathing apparatus fought the fire and extinguished it.

“There were lane closures Northbound and Southbound on the bridge.”

Some surrounding roads were badly backed up, with a major impact on traffic for a time.

By around 9.30am, the southbound lane had reopened, with traffic able to pass on the northbound bus lane, while firefighters continued to deal with the scene on the northbound side.
