Shania Twain Explains Why She Doesn't 'Hate' Her Ex-Husband ...

There are no hard feelings between Shania Twain and her ex-husband, Robert “Mutt” Lange.

In 2010, the pair got divorced after Twain discovered that Lange was allegedly having an affair with her former friend and personal assistant, Marie-Anne Thiébaud. A year later, Twain got married to Marie-Anne's husband Frédéric Thiébaud in 2011 and they are still together.

While recalling this moment and the domestic violence she witnessed in her household as a child, Twain said she has a particular way of dealing with forgiveness.

“Forgiveness is in the family of letting go. But forgiveness, more specifically for me anyway, is not about forgetting necessarily. It’s about understanding the other person, and that might mean that they’re wrong," she said on the May 24 episode of Jamie Laing's "Great Company" podcast. "Maybe you believe forever that whatever they did was wrong."

Twain said her stepfather was an example of someone that she "totally" forgave because she understood "he wasn't well."

"That you don't act certain ways unless there's something wrong with you," she continued. "There's something wrong with your stability so I don't hate him for having worse problems. I feel bad that he had those problems. So, it’s not for him. So, it’s very hard to hate or not be able to forgive somebody that you believe. He’s a human being that deserves empathy and understanding. I think we all do."

As for her ex, Twain said she doesn't "hate" him either.

"Do I hate my ex-husband for making a mistake? No. It’s his mistake. Not my mistake. So sad for him that he made such a great mistake that he has to live with, and I don’t know what that is, but it’s not... That’s not my weight."Twain and Mutt share their 22-year-old son, Eja, together. During a March 2023 appearance on Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast, Twain gave an update on her relationship with Mutt and said she only talks to her ex if it has something to do with their son.

“Mutt and I parent well together — for people who don’t talk to each other,” she said. “We’ll just text. We both love our son so much, so we don’t play any games like that. We have the same priority, we share spaces for him. No nonsense there.”
